I'm so glad you posted this. Reading Nathan's part is great. I had no idea he was Byck in the original Assassins workshop. How wild that he gave up originating a role in a new Sondheim musical to do Lisbon Traviata in LA. I know he had a close relationship with McNally, boy what a choice to have to make. And he is much more in the vain of Mario Catone who was wonderful in the role in the 2004 Broadway production. You hear or read a lot about early readings or workshops of other Sondheim shows, but rarely Assassins. Also interesting to see how many almost-productions Nathan had... I knew he was attached to Wise Guys (which became Bounce and then Road Show) and did a big workshop of it directed by Sam Mendes, and I'm still shocked he didn't do the role when it was being directed by Hal Prince... I assume he was still in the mix, and if they got Richard Kind they certainly didn't veer far from the Lane lane... I assume he had conflicts, but for a musicals guy and big Sondheim fan like Lane to have to give up Assassins AND Bounce... and then again not doing Here We Are. That's THREE new Sondheim musicals that he almost created roles in but then didn't. What a almost-legacy! In addition to fabulous legacy of his work in Forum and The Frogs. |
