Howard Miller takes a look at Cult of Love at the Hayes Theater:
As Leo Tolstoy observed in the opening to "Anna Karenina": "Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way." To which we might add, every successful play about an unhappy family broaches the theme in its own way. Examples abound, from Long Day's Journey into Night to August: Osage County to Appropriate, with many others before, during and since. And now, just in time for the holiday season, we get to spend Christmas with the thoroughly damaged Dahl family in Leslye Headland's Cult of Love, opening tonight at Second Stages' Hayes Theatre. |
