It's ''Emilia Perez,'' Netflix's Spanish-language musical thriller about a crime boss who wants to transition into a woman. It was largely passed over by the recent critics' awards in New York and L.A., but this morning it had a tremendous showing at the Golden Globes. Its 10 nominations include Best Musical or Comedy; Best Non-English Language Picture; Best Director (Jacques Audiard); Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy (Karla Sofia Gascon, the first trans performer ever nominated for an acting Globe); Supporting Actress (Zoe Saldana and Selena Gomez), and Original Song (''Mi Camino'' and ''El Mal''). ''Wicked'' got 4 nods, including Best Musical or Comedy; Actress (Cynthia Erivo); Supporting Actress (Ariana Grande). But no nomination for Jon M. Chu. And Netflix's adaptation of August Wilson's ''The Piano Lesson,'' starring John David Washington and Samuel Jackson, got zero nominations. |
