While the film version of Amadeus is very good, Shaffer really rewrote it for the screen so seeing it onstage is very different from seeing the film. Of course, the essence is the same, but my memory is that relatively little dialogue from the play is in the film. If someone other than Shaffer had written the screenplay, that person might well have kept more of the original dialogue, but Shaffer felt he could completely redo it for the screen.

If the right star (or pair of stars) wanted to do it on Broadway, I think we'd see it. I don't think it's all that good a play, but I can't say it doesn't make its effect (at least with the right cast).
