Well, to be fair, none of this production looks or feels like it takes place in literal Hollywood. It takes the story’s themes about Hollywood, and blows them up (literally) on a big screen. In the “walk” opening of Act II, I interpreted it as Joe stepping outside the story, breaking the fourth wall, and speaking (singing) to us directly as audience members sitting in the St. James Theatre. The lyrics might be about Sunset Boulevard in a literal sense, but the staging makes it a commentary on the entertainment industry as a whole. |
