OUT OF THE BOX THEATRICS ANNOUNCES INDUSTRY CONCERT PRESENTATIONS OF RICHARD MALTBY, JR. AND DAVID SHIRE'S ABOUT TIME THE FINAL INSTALLMENT OF THE STARTING HERE, STARTING NOW AND CLOSER THAN EVER TRILOGY (December 6, 2024 – New York, NY) – Out of the Box Theatrics (Liz Flemming , Founding Artistic Director) is pleased to announce three industry concert presentations of About Time, the final installment in the Starting Here, Starting Now and Closer Than Ever song trilogy, featuring lyrics by Tony Award winner Richard Maltby, Jr. (Ain't Misbehavin', Baby) and music by Academy and Grammy Award winner David Shire (Film: Saturday Night Fever, Norma Rae, Broadway: Baby , Big). At first, they were Starting Here, Starting Now. After a few years they were Closer Than Ever and now decades on, Maltby and Shire complete the trilogy about life they didn't know they were creating, and it's About Time. The cast features Gretchen Cryer (Broadway: Shelter; Off-Broadway: The Last Sweet Days of Isaac, I'm Getting My Act Together and Taking It On the Road), John Hillner (Broadway: Company, Crazy for You, Film: Vice), Tony Award winner Daniel H. Jenkins (Broadway: Big River, Mary Poppins; Film: The Irishman), David Jennings (Broadway: Days of Wine and Roses, Tina, Once on This Island), Aurelia Williams (Broadway: Parade, Once on This Island), and Drama Desk Award winner Lynne Wintersteller (Broadway: A Grand Night for Singing, Annie ; Off-Broadway: Closer Than Ever). The concert presentations will take place on December 10 at 1:00 PM, December 11 at 1:00 PM, and December 13 at 12:00 PM at Out of the Box Theatrics' home at 154 Christopher Street (formerly the New Ohio Theatre). BIOGRAPHIES RICHARD MALTBY, JR. (Lyrics). Broadway credits include Ain't Misbehavin' (conceived and directed, Tony Award for Best Director); Fosse (conceived and directed, Tony Award nomination, Best Director of a Musical); Baby (direction and lyrics, Tony Award nominations for Best Direction of a Musical and Best Score); Song & Dance (adapted and directed, Tony Award nominations for Best Direction of a Musical and Best Musical); Miss Saigon (lyrics, Tony Award nomination for Best Original Score); Big (lyrics, Tony Award nomination for Best Musical Score); Ring of Fire, (conceived and directed); The Pirate Queen (book and lyrics); The Story of my Life (Director). Off-Broadway: Starting Here, Starting Now (direction and lyrics, Grammy Award nomination); Closer Than Ever (lyrics and direction, Outer Critics Circle Award winner, Best Off-Broadway Lyrics). An Academy and Grammy Award winner and multiple Tony and Emmy Award nominee, Shire has composed prolifically for theater, films, television and recordings. Broadway: Baby, Big. Off-Broadway: Starting Here, Starting Now, Closer Than Ever, The Sap of Life, Urban Blight. Regional: How Do You Do, I Love You, Take Flight, Sousaztska and Waterfall. His numerous film scores include Norma Rae (Academy Award, Best Song), The Conversation, All the President's Men, The Taking of Pelham 1-2-3, Zodiac, Return to Oz, and Saturday Night Fever, for which he received two Grammy Awards. His many television scores have earned him five Emmy Award nominations. Shire's songs have been recorded by Barbra Streisand, Melissa Manchester, Jennifer Warnes, Billy Preston & Syreeta, Glen Campbell, Kiri Te Kawana, Julie Andrews, and Patti LuPone among many others. Recently, he was one of three composers commissioned by the Abu Dhabi Abrahamic Family House to compose the three-movement, "Symphony of Three: Peace, Love, Tolerance" for chorus and orchestra. It premiered at the Abu Dhabi annual arts festival last year and celebrated the completion of the house's three-sanctuary interfaith complex. Shire is also a member of the Council of the Dramatists Guild of America. He and Richard Maltby recently completed the 64-year first act of their continuous collaboration. David Shire and Richard Maltby met at Yale, and a biography of their collaboration, Closer Than Ever: The Unique Six-Decade Songwriting Partnership of Richard Maltby and David Shire by Joshua Rosenblum was published last May by the Oxford University Press, and is available on Amazon. OUT OF THE BOX THEATRICS was founded in 2016 by Liz Flemming, a legally blind artist, to create space for artists who have been historically underrepresented and undervalued.
