I'm sad I never got to see Hopkins onstage. I didn't begin making trips to London until the early 1990's when he had retired from stage work. I'd love to have seen him in PRAVDA or he and Judi Dench as ANTONY AND CLEOPATRA.
Eileen Atkins was a surprising replacement in DOUBT. I didn't see her live but I've seen a grainy recording and didn't feel she was right for it. At least she didn't capture the very American Catholic flintiness that Cherry Jones did, a quality that immediately transported me back to my mother's generation, who were so very similar. (I thought Amy Ryan did an excellent job, especially given her abbreviated rehearsal time.)
Speaking of replacing in Shaffer, Maggie Smith had a couple of impressive replacements in LETTICE & LOVAGE: Julie Harris on tour and the delectable Carole Shelley on Broadway, whom I was missing sorely watching the WICKED film last week. |
