| I became a huge fan of Helen Gallagher in the 1950's mostly from seeing her appearances on The Ed Sullivan Show. But also from her vocals on Broadway Cast Recordings of shows like Make a Wish; Pal Joey; and Hazel Flagg. She won an early Tony for playing Gladys in that revival of the Rodgers & Hart iconic musical. She became more famous in the 60's and 70's for big hits like Sweet Charity and No, No, Nanette, for which she won her 2nd Tony. She had 21 Broadway credits as a performer and 2 more as a choreographer. IOBDB lists 6 off-Broadway credits, but does not include shows like the 1983 Tallulah and the 2003 off-off-Broadway play Art, Life & Showbiz by Ain Gordon. One of my biggest regrets is that I didn't make a trip to New York in 2000 to see Gallagher, Jane Powell, Charlotte Rae, Mimi Hines, Jane Connell, George S. Irving, Robert Fitch, Marilyn Cooper, and others in the revival of 70, Girls, 70 at York Theatre. What a cast that was! However, I did finally catch Helen Gallagher on stage in 2003 for the Ain Gordon play. Her performance was thrilling, and the standing ovation she was given at the end brought a stream of tears down her face. I recall it vividly because I was sitting in the front row. On Wed., 11/20 while in the rush line for The Beacon at Irish Rep, I actually bumped into Kate Mulgrew, who was starring as the secretive (and somewhat enigmatic) Biev in that show. Mulgrew decades earlier had created the role of Gallagher's daughter Mary in the long-running TV soap Ryan's Hope. We exchanged greetings but that was all. If I had been a little more on the ball, I would have asked her if she still kept in touch with her TV mother, but sadly I didn't think of it. |
