I bought a ticket for this production months ago based on Tesori's connection to the piece. I was expecting to see something more like Weill's Street Scene, which is a hybrid between opera and musical theatre. Or even something more like Caroline, or Change, which is kind of like a chamber opera rather than standard Broadway scoring.

Nevertheless, I found the music to be powerful and appropriate, given the subject matter. The choral numbers for The Mothers girlfriends and The Father's police buddies were quite accessible for me.

I agree that the final scene is emotionally heart-rending. I'm glad that you found Blue to be as rewarding as I did.
