It's basically 'An August Osage County Christmas' - mostly a pretext for family recriminations and shouting. It's definitely overstuffed. I still enjoyed it though - a great cast working hard, and I'm always happy to see Mare Winningham in anything. I thought the 'plot twist' with the younger sister takes it too far away from any serious drama - it's just too easy and undercuts any substantive conflict around whatever the themes of the play were supposed to be. I liked all the singing! I hope they made some modest cuts since the early preview I saw, it was running longer than the indicated runtime and was just on the edge of overstaying its welcome.
