That is exactly how I have always thought of that line, Alan. It is part of why Gypsy is considered one of the great musicals. I have seen almost every iteration of Gypsy, the first being the film (which I love) and though only about 12 or 13 I remember being stunned at the line for it incredible impact with such few words. It made me feel very grown up, something few musicals had ever made me feel up to then no matter how much I loved the music. Just for the record, Angela Lansbury remains my favorite Rose. I took the bus to Melody Fair alone and watched her in a very simple in-the-round production but I can still remember her performance like it was yesterday. Never over the top, always believable and heartbreaking. Not something I can say about subsequent performances from all those who have taken on the role. |
