Laura Osnes and Wicked

The Osnes downfall remains a study in 1) self-sabotage; or 2) personally held beliefs as a career obstacle; 3) the deluded inability to correct the wrong path; or 4) all of the above. This weekend on Instagram she posted a snippet of a recent concert wherein, adorned in full Glinda drag, she performed "Popular," rather delightfully. She shares in the notes that she auditioned for B'way company, didn't get it, but was later offered Glinda in one of the national tours but turned it down to await Bonnie and Clyde finding a theater. She wanted her 2024 audience -- apparently now restricted to those who attend her niche concerts in the southern states in which she appears exclusively - to know the role was once hers, and it's a good fit.

I found this bit of self-promotion startlingly sad. I saw her in South Pacific and Bandstand and thought her genuinely stellar. When they were recasting the Encores! Woods I was reminded that she would've been a natural replacement. But she locked herself out of the New York end of the industry - I'm wondering if she's still performing as an AEA artist, having not done a book show since the debacle that ended her career. Her need to attach herself to Wicked this week is quite a piece of the Osnes narrative. A cautionary tale?
