But you could say the same for films of Chicago or Hairspray or Phantom (and others) all of which were shown to have short and long term positive sales impact on their live counterparts (and their licensing). And while the CC cast is crazy exciting, they’re not household names and aren’t driving sales—and I say this as someone who yells at the screen every time I see the Kimberly Akimbo tv spots that show Victoria Clark and company when the equally fabulous Carolee Carmello is playing the role. Ragtime hasn’t been a financial success and this broadcast could have been the item to introduce it as one the great works of the last 30 years and secure a much longer life as a viable property.

It’s just super rare to see one of these cancellations, let alone two, happen post-announcement because of the amount of people who have to be involved to get to the point of announcing. In both the theatre and tv broadcast, there are scheduling departments, marketing departments, ad sales, promotions… and if it’s a “well, we changed our mind” those producers have now left two national companies looking bad to their patrons.

It’s also a bummer because I really want to see it!
