It's a sober and intelligent show with high aspirations and a lot of craft in its songwriting, conception, staging and design. It reminded me of a show like THE BAND'S VISIT in that it is a musical without the usual bells and whistles and with deeply-felt performances by its cast. It's not perfect by any means but it deserves a look (or, in my case, a second look) and I hope Jesse Green's review spurs people to buy a ticket. If it makes it as far as June there are certainly a few numbers that should work quite effectively on the Tony's and if they don't mind giving it away, the coup de théatre when the ship hits rough waters could be impressive on TV if it's filmed well. |
