One could certainly argue that SOUTH PACIFIC was contemporary in that it was referencing World War II which had ended only 3 1/2 years before the show's premiere. James Michener's book was not even three years old, a very contemporary recording of the situation in the South Pacific. The relevance to the lives of that generation was one thing (of many, of course) that fueled its success; that became very clear to me when I was reading The Letters of Oscar Hammerstein II. Also, I was profoundly moved by the Michener quote used at the end of the Barlett Sher revival, which not only underscored the ongoing relevance of the show but its place in cultural history. (I saw that revival three times--once in New York and twice in L.A. and as a theatrical experience it got deeper and more resonant with each viewing.)
