So far this is the only one mentioned that seems to be the kind of show I was trying to find - a largish-cast musical (like, more than 10 people) with leading/featured roles and then also a decent-sized chorus. While many of the shows mentioned in this thread have all-male casts, most are smaller shows with 2-4 people. A few have a couple more in the cast, like Naked Boys Singing (which I would call a revue, FWIW), but they are still "ensemble" musicals, not ones with a large chorus. And the more I think about it there is something very different with Swept Away's chorus as opposed to a Forever Plaid or Altar Boyz or Thrill Me (which I saw and totally forgot about until now) or Glory Days, etc. I had never heard of Captains Courageous actually - so thank you for that. How fascinating that it is also set on a fishing boat out of New England. And there's a storm apparently. And then ditto the Billy Budd opera - the only other production with a large (more than 10) all-male cast, again, set on a boat. I guess if you want to write a big musical with all men, you have to set it on a whaling vessel. |
