I posted this on Instagram page. I hadn’t seen Elf before until tonight. Unexpected visit tonight to the Elf revival on Broadway (thanks to an old pal), a production that appeared on the West End. This revival directed by Philip Wm. McKinley is a total delight from start to finish with a wonderful cast, charming songs by Matthew Sklar and Chad Beguelin, a funny book by Thomas Meehan and Bob Martin (based on the popular movie) and some showstopping dance numbers thanks to choreographer Liam Steel. What a gift for the holiday season as this country goes through a difficult time. The cast is led by the gifted Grey Henson who is ideally cast as Buddy the Elf. He made me smile and laugh continuously throughout the evening. Kayla Davion who plays Buddy’s girlfriend Jovie lent her thrilling voice to Never Fall in Love (With an Elf) and had the audience cheering. This was followed by another song sung by Ashley Brown and Kai Edgar, There Is a Santa Claus, which also wowed the audience. Sean Astin (the book contains a Lord of the Rings joke), Michael Hayden, Jennifer Sanchez and Kalen Allen also get to shine along with the effervescent ensemble. Near the end of the show, Santa’s sleigh flying over the audience as snow falls over the front orchestra was so magical. I highly recommend you catch this before it closes early January. At times the evening reminded me of some giddy numbers that made us laugh when variety shows were popular on television years ago. |
