We agree completely. I saw Campo Wednesday afternoon, and her strained, non-chemistry with the new Cliff makes the center of the story an empty washout. When we get to the "who's the father" moment the blandly distracted Cliff seems so entirely uninterested, the whole damn show collapses. The scene sets up the title song and the piece is thus backed into a dark, dusty corner, baffling the audience. And then out she comes to bleat the iconic paean to both a dying venue and world order, blending Effie White and Rose Hovick, dressed like a drag king. The hideous wardrobe and wigs given Sally only add another wall between lovers that never seem to sleep in that "one narrow bed." But then, "Perfectly Marvelous," once a sexy come-on (listen to either Haworth or Richardson) feels like roommate negotiations in a 1990s college dorm. | |
