Depicting a suicide seems to be a popular bit of business to include in the musical despite it not being written in the published libretto--both the recent cinecast and a production I attended in Milwaukee a few years back put it in there.

I never got the see that cinecast unfortunately. I've never seen a production where anyone shot anyone. But, whatever. ;-)

IMO, if anyone were to kill themselves, given the story told in the musical, I would think it would be Murdoch, who sees himself as a failure at the end of the piece. I don't see Captain Smith taking that step. I feel that this dedicated man, who accepted this last journey even though he was supposed to have retired, staying with the ship to the bitter end,. But maybe that's just me.
