A friend of mine who is a Broadway house manager has a very different take on this. I asked him a few years ago why these long liens exist - they never did when I was going to big Broadway hits in the 1960s and 1970s.
H said that its not the security - it's the scanners.
Back in the day, a part of four would hand four tickets, they would tear all 4, and send you in.
