Thank you , Ann for your concise yet informative reviews. I agree that Ragtime is stunning, rapturous and sadly too relevant, even more so than when it first premiered. As for McNeal, I was interested throughout the play but perhaps liked it a bit less than you did. I do agree however that Robert Downey Jr. is a fine actor with a stage presence which belies the brief amounts of time he has spent onstage in his life. I hope he does more theater in the future. As to Andrea Martin, I understand your criticism which was shared by many professional reviewers, I must say I know this woman. I have encountered her in a doctor's office (she was the office manager or something) in a library (where she was a librarian) and a sales clerk (I forget what store) and a couple other times (usually on the Upper West Side or in Brooklyn -Park Slope.) I don't know Akhtar envisioned the character that way but I am fascinated that Martin did and must say that there is no reason this woman should not be a literary agent of some success. And yes when I have encountered her in real life she is usually Jewish but once she was I think Irish but the common characteristic is she is always just a little bit overdone and a bit louder than everyone else. I was amazed to see her on the stage as portrayed by Martin. I did enjoy your telling about the audience member'sselfie with the cast. I hope that doesn't catch on. | |
