Blaine doesn't really strio, um strip. :-) I hadn't seen this film in a long time and watched it last night. I don't know if I'm in the minority on this, but I really don't like the film very much. It really lacks that certain charisma that I've even seen readily in high school stage productions. Sinatra is a little too "cool" for Nathan (he of course wanted to play Sky, and I think it shows), and although "Adelaide" isn't a bad song, it feels like it's only there because Frank demanded a number. Blaine, yes, is a master class in how to do more with less (her Adelaide here is much more honest and smart than many I've seen play the role) - but the other Broadway holdover, Stubby Kaye, feels like he's phoning it in. I do like Simmons and Brando (though I do wish he had been dubbed), but I don't really like the rewrites of their scenes. There are many times when I feel the cinematography just feels flat. And was "Marry The Man Today" cut for time, or did they really feel we could just jump ahead and get to the end without it? Bad choice IMO. Also odd that they changed some of Loesser's wonderful colorful references. No more Brooks Brothers. (Really?) No "hollanderize" (we get "shorten the sleeves" twice instead - he couldn't find something else?) So sue me...;-) |
