This reminds me of another funny Maggie Smith anecdote. I’ll repeat it as I remember it. I’m sure I’m misquoting, but I know I have it right in spirit.

When Maggie Smith was in “Lettice and Lovage” at the Barrymore, there was a short-lived musical about Mahalia Jackson called “Truly Blessed.” It played at the Longacre, and the sound must have bled into the Barrymore and was annoying Ms. Smith. She asked someone to do something about it.

To address the issue, they decided to hang more stage curtains (commonly called blacks) in the wings at the Longacre to muffle some of the sound in that direction. When Maggie Smith was told they were fixing the problem by hanging the blacks (at a gospel musical, remember), she said something to the effect of “Well, that seems excessive…”
