Thanks for the correction about Kahn being nominated. I think I knew that, but had a momentary lapse. Since then, Kaye's become a 2-time Tony winner. I'm reminded, too, that the Tonys allowed Larry Kert to be Tony nominated in 1971, even though he took over for Dean Jones as Bobby in ''Company.'' I guess they decided NOT to give Kaye the same dispensation, although maybe it involved how long Kahn did ''On the Twentieth Century'' before leaving. As for Comden's estate, by coincidence, I also posted yesterday about how the current national tour of ''Peter Pan'' has a new song called ''Friends Forever'' (to replace ''Ugg-a-Wugg''). Amanda Green took ''Comes Once In a Lifetime'' from ''Subways Are For Sleeping'' and wrote new lyrics. Below is a video that includes Amanda talking about reworking this tune by her father, Comden and Jule Styne. And Nolan Almeida and Raye Zaragoza sing a snippet of it. For the record, I've enjoyed Amanda's comic cabaret tunes (like ''Every Time a Friend Succeeds'') and love her lyrics and Tom Kitt's music to ''High Fidelity.'' |
