Don Black, Christopher Hampton and Andrew Lloyd Webber won the 1995 Tony for Best Score for ''Sunset.'' And Black and Hampton won for Best Book. But I don't remember. Because they were the only eligible nominees, were they announced the de facto winners? Or did the Tony voters still vote on them? At the 2021 Tonys, Aaron Tveit (''Moulin Rouge!'') was the sole nominee for Best Actor in a Musical, but he needed 60% of the Tony voters to vote for him. On rare occasion, the Tony Awards have exercised their discretion to drop categories. At the 1989 Tonys, they eliminated the Tonys for Best Book and Best Score, even though they could've fielded those categories with ''Chu Chem,'' ''Legs Diamond,'' ''Welcome to the Club'' and ''Starmites,'' which WAS nominated for Best Musical. And at the 1985 Tonys, they dropped the categories of Leading Actor and Actress in a Musical, as well as Choreography. |
