World Premiere of Adam Szymkowicz’s New Play

The Sex Writer

October 30 – November 17 at The Gene Frankel Theatre

When a family tragedy occurs, a writer returns to her hometown in the World Premiere of Adam Szymkowicz’s new play The Sex Writer. The limited run plays October 30 – November 17 at The Gene Frankel Theatre in NoHo. The Sex Writer is directed by Thin Duke’s Founding Artistic Director Philip Cruise, and features Seth Gilliam who is well known to television audiences for his work on The Wire and The Walking Dead.

Thin Duke and SparkPlug Productions previously worked with Szymkowicz on the award-winning play Clown Bar 2 at NYC Fringe Festival last Spring. Clown Bar 2 won four awards including a 2024 Audience Choice Fringe Award.

Jane's father, an "important" writer has just died by suicide and Jane goes home to her small town to deal with the details of death. Jane is a professor and spicy romance writer and as she meets new possibilities and old loves, she narrates all her sexual longings. She struggles to deal with the grief from her father's death and the feeling that he deserted her a long time ago.

The cast features David Arthur Bachrach (As You Like It/Frog & Peach), Olivia Baseman (The War of Woo), Philip Cruise (Final Boarding Call/WTP/Ma-Yi Theatre Company), Tammi Cubilette (House of Buggin’), Sionne Elise (The War of Woo), Callie Fabac (Clown Bar 2), Seth Gilliam (The Wire/The Walking Dead), Jim Hawkins (Clown Bar 2), Christopher Lee (Clown Bar 2), Edward Miller (Last Bar at the End of the World), and Jack Morrill (Walk Up Theatre Collective).

The creative and production team includes Holly Pocket McCaffrey (costume design), PJ Mapother (lighting and sound design), and Tommy Pegan (stage management). Produced by Thin Duke Productions in association with SparkPlug Productions, with Philip Cruise, Seth Gilliam, Christopher Lee, and Edward Miller.

The Sex Writer runs October 30 - November 17 with performances Wednesday - Sunday at 8pm, and Sunday’s at 3pm (no performance on Thursday, October 31). Running time: 75 minutes. The Gene Frankel Theatre is located at 24 Bond Street (Between Lafayette & Bowery), New York, NY 10012. Subways: 6 to Bleecker Street, B/D/F/M to Broadway/Lafayette. Tickets are $35.


BIOGRAPHIES

Adam Szymkowicz (playwright) plays have been produced throughout the U.S., and in Canada, England, Wales, The Isle of Man, Ireland, The Netherlands, New Zealand, Australia, Germany, Greece, Mexico, Turkey, Switzerland, South Korea, Thailand, Sweden, Austria, Slovenia and Lithuania. His work has been presented or developed at such places as Portland Center Stage, MCC Theater, Ars Nova, South Coast Rep, Playwrights Horizons, LCT3, LAByrinth Theater Company, The Lark, Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, Primary Stages and The New Group, among others. His plays are published by Dramatists Play Service, Concord/Samuel French, Playscripts, Broadway Play Publishing, Theatrical Rights Worldwide, Stage Partners and Original Works Publishing, and are featured in numerous Smith and Kraus and Applause books. His monologue book, Small Explosions comes out from Applause in 2023.

Adam received a Playwright’s Diploma from The Juilliard School's Lila Acheson Wallace American Playwrights Program and an MFA from Columbia University where he was the Dean’s Fellow. Szymkowicz is a two-time Lecomte du Nouy Prize winner, a member of the Dramatists Guild, Writer’s Guild of America, and was a member of Primary Stages’ Dorothy Strelsin New American Writer’s Group, the MCC Playwright’s Coalition and of the very first Ars Nova Play Group.

Philip Cruise (director) is a New York-based actor, writer and director who formed Thin Duke Productions in 2003. His directorial credits include TWELFTH NIGHT (or WHAT YOU WILL), the political comedy KING GEORGE II, BRIGHT DAY, Mac Wellman’s 7 BLOWJOBS, and two by Dean Haspiel: THE LAST BAR AT THE END OF THE WORLD, and THE WAR OF WOO, all produced by Thin Duke. Acting credits include FINAL BOARDING CALL (Ma-Yi), PLAYDATE (3 Days Prior), REFUSE (Gemini Collisionworks) HARAKIRI KANE (GCW), LET TRUMP BE TRUMP (Making It Happen Production) and ABORTION: A RACE REDUX (Making It Happen). Philip was a staff writer and Voice Artist on the GCW Science Fiction Podcast LIFE WITH ALTHAAR for two and a half seasons. Film: THE FOX SISTERS (Cineteca Films), THE COUCH, THE FAILURE, and the upcoming short BIGBY’S DEAD BUNNY.

Thin Duke Productions was founded in 2003 by Philip Cruise, Artistic Director, with the goal of bringing both classical and original works to the New York City stage for an affordable price that is accessible to all. SparkPlug Productions is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit theatre company founded by Christopher Lee and Rebekkah Ross, Artistic Directors, to create performance opportunities for artists we believe in.
