I was at Thursday’s matinee too. I found myself resisting the show at first; for the first twenty minutes or so, I felt like I was watching the worst writing workshop ever. But it sure drew me in, and I was surprised by the tears trickling from the corner of my eyes a while later. Ultimately, I thought it was a beautiful show with an endearing and supremely talented cast. I was very moved by it, but I probably would have been even more responsive to it were I a few decades younger; with its passion, sincerity and urgency, I think it’s a young person’s show. I never saw Movin’ Out, but Illinoise reminded me of a dance piece that used to be a staple of the Joffrey Ballet’s repertoire back in the 70s, Gerald Arpino’s Trinity, a celebration of youth and community and connectedness that jump-started my interest in dance and that made a huge impression on me back in my teens. I rarely see shows more than once, but I’m more interested in a return visit to Illinoise than I am in seeing any of the other new musicals that landed on Broadway in the last few weeks. To anyone who’s on the fence about seeing Illinoise: yes, indeed, go see it.
